Wearable Arts Awards 2012

The Strathallan Wearable Arts Show was held on Thursday the 14th of June 2012, but this year offered something more than the norm. This year promised to be bigger, to be better than any Wearable Arts show Strathallan had ever held. Led by Senior Council member Zephania Steele, the 2012 event had become so massive, an evening show was to be held with guest judges which are household names throughout New Zealand.

Tickets had sold out days before as students rushed to purchase tickets for their chance to see, and possibly even meet the celebrity guest judges for the evening show. But who could possibly spur such excitement amongst Strathallan students by their mere presence? Colin Mathura-Jeffree, Natalie Chan, Andrea Plowright, Mike Puru and Sharyn Wakefield, that's who.

Mathura-Jeffree is a regular judge of the Miss New Zealand pageant and holds over 20 years of modelling experience, perhaps best known by most youngsters as one of the wonderful judges from New Zealand's Next Top Model, and three-time host of New Zealand's Hottest Home baker.

Natalie Chan, a former ACG Senior College student, has been working in the NZ fashion industry since 2001, and now owns a boutique where she designs and makes beautiful couture gowns and tea-length dresses, as well as couture millinery, headwear and veils - all of which are one-off designs.

Plowright, for the past six years, has been the Head Agent and Manager for prominent modelling agency 62 Models and Talent. She is responsible for scouting and developing new models, as well as overseeing the daily operations of the agency.

Mike Puru and Sharyn Wakefield are very well-known throughout New Zealand as radio announcers/presenters on The Edge FM. Sharyn has been at The Edge for 6 years, and now works as the Sports girl for Jay-Jay, Mike & Dom as well as the 10am-2pm announcer and the Music Director of The Edge. To top it off, Wakefield also holds a spot as a presenter on Four Live. Puru has been involved with Rockquest, as well as recently winning The Best Music Breakfast Metropolitan Show at the NZ Radio Awards along with Jay-Jay and Dom.

The Wearable Arts Designs resembled those seen at the national competition level, as models showcased handcrafted capes, umbrellas, dresses and even shoes to a very impressed audience. From rose-adorned coats to hand-painted students, the theme of "Once Upon A Time" had clearly been a focus for each designer.

Students from the primary school were given the chance to model their creations also, with some of them quite obviously being well aware of how they could best "work" the catwalk, drawing loud cheers from not only their proud parents but the rest of the audience also.

The Strathallan Drama Club kept the audience entertained throughout the breaks with "The Fairy Trial", while Canadian comedian Desiree McKenzie kept them laughing with tales of her experiences as an exchange student in New Zealand.

At the end of the night, after the judges had returned from their deliberation, the winners were to be announced. The winners of the night were:

The Wearable Arts committee promised the event would be a fantastic night, and they definitely delivered on this promise. Congratulations to all involved, and best of luck to next year's committee for topping this year's Awards.
