Sir John Graham
Sir John, co-founder of ACG and Chairman for most of the first 17 years of the company's life, is a remarkable man possessed of vision and clarity and the ability to motivate and lead people.
An All Black from 1958 to 1964, Sir John captained the team three times. He was Manager of the New Zealand cricket team from 1997 to 1999 and President of the New Zealand Rugby Union from 2005 to 2007. In 2007, he received the Westpac Halberg Awards "Leadership Award".
After gaining an MA (Hons) in History, Sir John's education career began with teaching in state schools in Christchurch from which he rapidly rose to become Headmaster of Auckland Grammar School (AGS), from 1973 to 1993.
After leaving AGS, Sir John was involved for some years as Commissioner of Nga Tapuwae College. With help from leaders in the Maori community, Sir John turned the school into a strong centre that valued diverse cultures and supported learning.
Sir John was a member of the University of Auckland Council from 1994, and was the Chancellor from 1999 to 2004. Having been awarded a CBE in 1994, Sir John was further honoured with an Honorary Doctorate (DLit) in 2005.
Sir John also held a number of directorships, including IT distributor Renaissance Corporation, The University Bookshop Ltd and transportation company Owens Group Ltd. He was Chairman of the NZ Education Scholarship Trust and numerous charitable trusts.
In 1999 Sir John was named 'New Zealander of the Year' by North & South magazine, the cover article of the January 2000 edition running under the heading, "John Graham, the man who set standards".
Sir John was elected president of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union in 2005, and received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Auckland the same year.
In 2009, Sir John was awarded Distinguished Citizen of Auckland Award for his contributions, leadership and service to sport, education and charity.
In the 2011 Queen's Birthday Honours List, Sir John was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to education and sports.
Sir John received the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award in 2012.
Sir John is currently a member of the ACG Education Council.
