Clarence van der Wel

Chief Operating Officer

Background

Clarance van der Wel studied Mathematics at Waikato University before beginning his teaching career as a mathematics teacher at Hauraki Plains College in 1978.

He went on to hold a number of middle and senior management positions before joining the ACG Group as the Principal of Junior College in 1999. He then moved to Strathallan as Executive Principal in 2001.

ACG Career

In his 9 years as principal of Strathallan Clarence van der Wel has more than made his mark on the School. As a principal Clarence consistently and tirelessly worked towards realising the ACG vision, developing a high performing school with academic achievement and personal development at the foundation.

As an educator Clarence raised the bar in best practice at Strathallan School, initially introducing the Cambridge International Examination as part of the primary, middle and senior school curriculum. This initiative ensured consistency in curriculum from years 1-13 and gave Strathallan students the opportunity to be assessed and benchmarked against international standards.

Clarence has been instrumental in the exponential success of Strathallan, not only in the development and achievement of the students but also in the development of the school's facilities. In 2009 Clarence successfully spearheaded the drive to secure a $5 million development of an art and technology building, something the school will benefit from for many years to come.

In 2010, Clarence made the move to join the ACG Group as CEO of Education. The new challenge allows Clarence to continue to raise the standards of education and assessment at all ACG Schools.

In 2012, Clarence was appointed Chief Operating Officer.
