RYZ up and slam it poetry style.

ACG_Parnell_College_Prefect_Hayden_RazzellMotivated for and by his peers, ACG Parnell prefect, Hayden Razzel is the organiser of the Auckland Youth Council’s Poetry Slam.

“The event is in celebration of the International Youth Day, which gives a voice to youth.  The Poetry Slam is about showing the community that the youth right here, right now, have an opinion that’s worth listening to.  Auckland’s youth have great ideas and different perspectives, and the Poetry Slam allows these to be heard in a unique, interactive and fun way.”

Dotted amongst sizzling poetry talent are local youth bands, such as ACG Parnell’s Vent which featured recently in Auckland’s Smokefree Rock Quest.

Poetry is an old art that remains just as relevant today as it was generations before us.  Rather than the “about” poetry connects to emotion and gives it a voice. Today, as so many teenagers struggle to be heard amongst the loud buzz of society this event plugs into what often remains unsaid, saying and naming thoughts, emotions and issues unique to this generation of youth.

“Hayden is always getting stuck in and helping others, he has excellent leadership ability.  The Poetry Slam is a great example of how we encourage students to think of others and to give back to the community. At this age teenagers have so many skills that can help others, it’s a matter of having the opportunity to tap into these so everyone can benefit.” said Larne Edmeades, ACG Parnell Principal.
