Rowing

RowingOur rowers recently competed in the North Island Secondary Schools Champs, held at Lake Karapiro. They all performed extremely well, and our boys under-15 team of Samuel Jenkin, Daniel Oswin, Ian Laing, Gareth Hall and Glen Laing came 7th in their final, in a personal best time, placing them 17th in the North Island and qualifying them for the Maadi Cup – an outstanding result. Ethan Nelson, Corrie May, Adam Neal, Bailee Simpson and Amy McNeil also competed over the weekend and achieved some excellent results.

Getting up at five o'clock in the morning is not my favourite way to start the day, however this was a sacrifice we had to make to ensure we made it down to Cambridge in time for our dressage tests.

And it was worth it! Winning the North Island Sconday Schools Dressage competition.

Our junior riders competed well with Savannah Stirling placing 3rd in both her level 1 and 2 tests and Georgina Forsyth placing 2nd and 8th in the same classes. In the seniors, Zephania Steele was 2nd and 3rd in the level 1 and 2 and Caitlin Benzie was 1st in both her level 3 and 4 test, level 4 being the highest class. Caitlin was the highest scoring individual rider for the third year in a row and it was a great way to end her journey with her horse Larry who is officially entering retirement.

The last time the school won the the title was in 2007 when sisters Sarah and Andy Morgan, Jessica Steel and Chloe Kennedy competed together.

Spanish and Football

Spanish and FootballStrathallan was extremely fortunate to have three very talented Spanish football players visit on 14th November.

The players involved were Manel Expósito, Ángel Viñas and Pedro Santa Cecilia. All of the players play for the Auckland City Football Club currently but have played for overseas teams as well. They spoke to the students in Spanish and talked enthusiastically to them about their lives in Spain, their love for football and also the differences they've found between New Zealand and Spain.

Performing Outside the Classroom

playing hockeyIt's not only our students who enjoy their sport. Their passion is also shared by a number of staff members who enjoy regular sports involvement both inside and outside of school hours.

When English teacher Jo Cook retired from basketball she turned to running, little realising that it would develop into an interest in triathlons. As Jo puts it, "the swim is a nice warm up, the bike lets you enjoy some great views and the run....well, you're nearly finished then aren't you?"

After 18 months' preparation Jo qualified for a place in the New Zealand team for her age group and competed in the World Championships in Auckland at Labour Weekend. She sees her triathlon involvement as being as much about the way we view things such as determination to achieve our goals, as about the physical involvement.

ACG Parnell College Tae Kwon Do - KristovKristov Sokratov (9BQZ) won four bouts of sparring at the National Championships recently and he is now the Under 14 Champion - very well done Kristov!

Sporting facilities 3ACG is very pleased to announce that work is well underway on the upgrade of the sports facilities at ACG Strathallan. The rugby field and one soccer field are having drainage laid. With this and a well planned maintenance programme, the school will have a high quality playing surface throughout the winter season and a cricket field in summer.

An artificial hockey turf is being installed at the car park end of the playing fields. The turf will be of a very high quality with a surface that is up to international hockey standards. It will accommodate daily school sport and physical education as well as training and practice facilities principally for hockey. When completed, this will include a pavilion with a function room which, in conjunction with the turf, will become a community sporting facility.
