Mathematics Programme

Mathematics is used in every day life, in other learning areas and in the workplace. It develops a means to be able to investigate, interpret and make sense of the world we live in. In Mathematics, students learn to think logically, critically and creatively.

At Sunderland College, Mathematics starts at Year 7 with the expertise of specialist teachers. We encourage and develop choice making. Students learn to choose activities that will support and extend their learning. They use thinking skills to process and review their work. Furthermore, they complete homework appropriate to their needs.

Sunderland students are also encouraged to participate in a range of competitions and activities, such as ICAS, AUS maths, Otago Problem Challenge, Mathex, World Maths day and Maths Week.

The Sunderland curriculum that is taught from year 7 to year 10 is geared toward IGSCE Cambridge exams in Year 11 while still adhering to the Key Competencies as set out in the New Zealand Curriculum. The AS course follows on in Year 12.
