Physical Education and Health Programme
The Physical Education and Health programme is designed to challenge students to reach their utmost potential as well as provide students with positive values and informed attitudes towards health and well-being.
Physical Education should be a positive experience and therefore, we strive to cater for a wide range of abilities and interests to meet our students' needs. Effort is considered to be a major factor in a student success. All students are also encouraged to take part in the co-curricular activities that the school offers.
Year 7- 10 Health and Physical Education
Physical Education is compulsory for all students at Sunderland College at the year 7 to 10 level. The course aims to provide a diversity of practical applications to cover the requirements of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum. All students are encouraged to achieve their potential in sports such as Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Football, Softball, Tennis and Volleyball. The students in Year 10 are introduced to the theoretical concepts of physical movements and health. Each year level will attend a camp in Term Four as a part of their outdoor education experience.
Year 11 IGCSE Physical Education
The CIE - IGCSE course consists of both practical and theoretical elements. Students will be assessed on their individual skills and ability to analyse performance in four selected sports totalling 60% of their final mark.
The remaining 40% is based on a written examination on the areas of:
Year 12 AS Physical Education
The CIE - AS course, consists of three core theoretical areas; Physiology and Anatomy, Skill Acquisition and Psychology, and Contemporary Issues. These three areas are examined and make up 70% of the course.
The remaining 30% involves students being assessed on their practical ability in two sports.
