Mr van der Wel began his career as a Mathematics teacher in 1978 at Hauraki Plains College. After holding various middle and senior management positions he joined the Academic Colleges Group as the foundation Principal of the Junior College of New Zealand (now ACG Parnell College) in 1999. In 2001 he took up the role of foundation Principal of ACG Strathallan.
