ACG Strathallan welcomes new Executive Principal

ACG Strathallan is delighted to welcome Danny O’Connor as Executive Principal from Term 3, 2017.

Mr O’Connor joins the school from his position as High School Principal of UWCSEA Dover Campus, in Singapore, where he was responsible for 1,300 high school students and 140 staff. UWCSEA is internationally recognised for providing a challenging, holistic, values-based education with an emphasis on academic achievement, teamwork and leadership. The school’s academic results are among the best in the world.

Originally from South Auckland, Mr O’Connor began teaching at St Peters College in Epsom before moving to the United Kingdom and then Hong Kong. He joined UWCSEA in 2011.

He said ACG Strathallan’s holistic approach to education and the unique learning environment created by having students from Preschool to Year 13 on the same campus were determining factors in his decision to move back to New Zealand after 18 years abroad.

“I believe passionately in providing students with a holistic education based on strong core values so they develop as learners and as individuals, both in the classroom and beyond,” he said.

He said it was an exciting proposition to be in a leadership role in education in New Zealand today. “So many schools are grappling with how best to respond to a world that is changing at an exponential rate. There is an increasing focus on developing knowledge and skills that transcend traditional disciplines. We need to teach students to be creative, think critically and work collaboratively – these are crucial skills for an uncertain future.”

Mr O’Connor has a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and Management from The University of Hong Kong and is an accomplished sportsman who enjoys swimming, cycling, rugby. He represented Auckland in track cycling and played international rugby for Hong Kong. He said he was looking forward to returning to where he grew up, and being part of the wider community in Karaka.

Clarence van der Wel, Director of Schools at ACG Education, said the school was thrilled to have appointed someone of Mr O’Connor’s calibre and experience.

“Mr O’Connor is an outstanding educator who will bring an exciting dimension to the school. ACG Strathallan provides a world-class education to students in the South Auckland region and will greatly benefit from Mr O’Connor’s strong sports focus and his experience in leading one of the world’s best schools.”
