A team from ACG Parnell College has won the New Zealand Secondary School Junior Badminton Championships 2017.
Jonathan Lau, Jerry Jian (Year 9), Daniel Hu (Year 7) and Jim Xia (Year 10) formed the team that played at Auckland Badminton in Newmarket last week.
Sucheol Lee (Year 9), another member of the team, was unfortunately unavailable on the day.
Sports Coordinator Gillian Magerkorth said the team had excellent skills and listened to their ‘great’ coach Brent Millar, Jerry’s Dad.
“We were fortunate to have a New Zealand Badminton coach as our coach for the day. This was really helpful for the students he could tell them how to play to win. The students took this on board.”
Badminton is a growing sport at ACG Parnell College – with one of the highest rates of participation of any sport. The school has a close working relationship with Auckland Badminton, which runs Badminton Club and a primary school badminton programme.
“The top players are dedicated to their sport and put long hours into practising. The students all listen to the coaches and take the training on board,” Ms Magerkorth explained.
Principal Russell Brooke said he was proud of the team’s achievement.
“This just shows what is possible with intelligent practice, great coaching and belief. Sports like badminton happen because students, parents and coaches give up their time and energy, and as a school, we’re delighted that this has come together this week in such an outstanding result.”
