ACG Sunderland student Jack Feng, 17, hails from Henan, China. A top student, he is fully involved in school life, participating in Battle of the Bands, jazz band, soccer coaching, basketball and more. He also took part in the school’s recent Science trip to South Africa.

“I chose to come to New Zealand to study, because of the open and respectful Kiwi culture and environment and fully immersive English language atmosphere,” he explains. “I chose ACG Sunderland for its determination to education – it has been a delightful coincidence.”

Jack says the best thing about the school is the fantastic relationships he’s developed with friends and teachers. His English language skills have improved “enormously”, from knowing just a few words to communicating with pride and confidence.

He’s a black belt second dan in Karate, coaches soccer, plays the trombone and manages school the chess club. “Most of the activities I enjoy doing as hobbies, at the same time the joy of being able to develop into a more diverse and captivating individual also motivates me. Taking part in these activities builds unforgettable experiences and most importantly opens up a range of opportunities.”

An aspiring doctor who loves maths, he hopes to go on to study medicine in Australia or the UK. For now, he’s concentrating on getting his international travel fix on the school’s Science trip to South Africa. As one of seven students on the trip, he will be lending a hand collecting data for international university research projects in Dinokeng reserve and getting his PADI certificate scuba diving and snorkelling in the Sodwana wetlands.

“Going to Africa has always been on my bucket list, so I was not going to miss the chance of going, especially with my best mates and two wonderful teachers that I really enjoy spending time with. It’s a chance to fulfil one of my dreams.”

Principal Nathan Villars said Jack was fully committed to ACG Sunderland’s values.

“He’s a wonderful young man who’s clearly taking all opportunities that come his way.”
