Talented musician wins university scholarship

Our student Li Yinchi (Richard) has been awarded a New Zealand School of Music Excellence Scholarship, worth $2,000 NZD. Richard is from China.

“I’ve been in New Zealand one year. I love NZ and I also love Wellington – it’s a small city and the lifestyle is not too fast so I feel comfortable here.

I decided to study guitar when I was in middle school. Now I’ve played classical guitar for six years.

I passed all of my courses with ACG so I’m going to study a Bachelor of Music at Victoria University, majoring in classical guitar. Before my audition to get into the course, I practised my guitar for five hours every night and studied music theory with my teacher and classmate.

Victoria University professors chose one student in the audition to get the scholarship. A month after the audition I got the email, saying I had been awarded the scholarship for $2,000 NZ dollars.

My plan now is to practise my guitar six hours per day and study and understand Western music. I want to do competitions in NZ or in Australia so I have some achievements at university.

When I finish my study I want to be a performer or teach classical music at Victoria University, or somewhere else.

ACG has helped me a lot.”

Richard completed the Victoria University of Wellington Certificate in Foundation Studies.
